About Me

Professionally

I have been working on a range of projects including TV idents, Commercials, Music videos and more recently Supervising shots and sequences on a few feature films and large commercials.

I have been involved in all stages of commercial and feature film production at Prime Focus. I have dealt with many clients in initial meetings and when supervising various VFX shoots.

With a technical background, I have been moving from a Generalist role to that of a Technical Director, assisting Junior members of the team and helping Senior artistic 2D and 3D ops. I regularly develop small scripts, tools and expressions for other colleagues to achieve certain effects or to save-time with repetitive tasks.

Although in my 3D career so far I have been very general, my strengths in 3D lie in the areas of shading and rendering. With knowledge of the mathematical processes involved I am able to quickly create complex shader trees and ensure they are optimised for rendering. My programming background also enables me to create custom shaders (mainly mental ray), although I havent had much of a chance to do so in a production environment. I would like to learn more about creating shaders for MentalRay and Renderman.

Many of the jobs I have been assigned to have involved simulation (Particles, Fluids, Cloth, Rigid/Soft Bodies) and have used many 3D packages and stand-alone tools to create these effects.

I am weakest at Character Animation and Texture painting, although I have completed lots of projects involving physically accurate or mechanical animation. I am also able to quickly setup lots of camera animation or interesting shots for previz or to match existing plates, sometimes with client attendance.

The software that I have been using includes Softimage XSI, RealFlow, Shake, Fusion, Syntheyes, Boujou, Photoshop. I am able to learn new software packages very quickly

I have a wide range of technical scripting and programming skills. Recently I have concentrated on Python and JScript and PHP for web-based tools development. I have experience with OpenGL programming and C, C++ and C# but havent had much use for these in my current role.

A strong interest in photography is helping me with the cinematography side of the processes. Everything from simulating the effects of different types of lenses, to setting up pleasingly framed shots to understanding lots of properties of light and colour. When attending shoots I like to capture lots of reference photography, textures and HDR panoramas for lighting and reflection reference.
